Agilent 5900 ICP-OES SVDV

The inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer allows fast and precise concentration analysis of up to 70 elements in liquid samples (mostly aqueous solutions). The spectrometer is also able to perform a rapid IntelliQuant method, which provides identification of all elements that are present in the sample.

Contact person: Ing. Karolína Pánová (panovaka@vscht.cz)

UV-VIS spektrometer Shimadzu UV-2450

The spectrometer allows the measurement of absorbance or transmittance of samples in various wavelengths. This measurement can be useful for coatings on the surface of glass or in the development of new materials with special optical properties. It is also useful in measuring the concentration of selected elements in liquid samples (methods based on monitoring the colour intensity of the sample, which is dependent on the concentration of the element).

Contact person: Ing. Karolína Pánová (panovaka@vscht.cz)

Optical microscope Olympus BX51

The optical microscope is used to observe various samples in the incident or passing light in the magnification of 2–50x. The sample is scanned by the digital camera Promicam 3-5CP (Promicra, s.r.o.), and obtained images are processed by the QuickPhoto Camera 2.3 program. The microscope is also equipped with the Deep Focus module used for the observation of samples with uneven surfaces.

Contact person: Ing. Karolína Pánová (panovaka@vscht.cz)

Flow box FASTER SafeFAST Elite 212 S

The flow box is equipped with its own air circulation (vertical laminar airflow) and it is used during any manipulation with biological or otherwise harmful material – in our laboratory it is mainly antibacterial testing of new materials. The system provides an effective barrier between the inner and outer environment, protecting the material inside from outside contamination and the operator and surrounding area from the contamination of any biological material from inside. The flow box has the biohazard class II and it is equipped with a UV lamp for sterilization.

Contact person: Ing. Diana Horkavcová, Ph.D. (diana.horkavcova@vscht.cz)

Dip-coater ID Lab

The automated box for dip-coating is used for the controlled preparation of various coatings on different substrates. The box allows the customization of the immersion and surfacing rates, the length of the immersion delay, and the starting and final height of the holder.

Contact person: Ing. Diana Horkavcová, Ph.D. (diana.horkavcova@vscht.cz)

Demineralized water production line Watek DEMIWA 5 rosa

The device produces purified water using reverse osmosis (it can remove inorganic ions from tap water up to 95–99 % success rate). A mechanical filter is included at the tap water input as well as the activated charcoal for dechlorination, followed by an ion exchanger and microbial filter at the output. The demineralized water has conductivity levels below 1 µS/cm and is suitable for use in very sensitive analytical methods.

Contact person: Ing. Karolína Pánová (panovaka@vscht.cz)

A new book about historical glass, Regional Glass Production and Imports in Central Europe in the 13th–18th Centuries, Part II: Chrudim, was just published. Our colleagues contributed greatly to the publication.

Mediaeval archaeology has discovered large assemblages of mediaeval glass that have changed the assessment of the role of this commodity in the mediaeval household. Findings from seven houseplots of the historic core of town of Chrudim from the 13th - 17th centuries were evaluated. They demonstrate that sophisticated ways of dining were common in bourgeois households. From the 16th century onwards, the originally domestic glass was supplemented with luxury items from abroad. The picture of everyday life is completed by testimony of kitchen and table ceramics, stove tiles and metal inventory, as well as the transformations of bourgeois houses and the yards behind them. Together with first volume, it compares the contemporary situation in Brno a Wroclaw. The published glass is the largest detailed set published so far from Czech Republic and illustrates the importance of Chrudim in the Middle Ages.

TheSciFest is the largest outdoor popular science event in the Czech Republic and has been a joint project of universities, academic departments and leisure institutions since 2011.
The Institute of Glass and Ceramics doctoral students participated in the materials-oriented stand of the UCT Prague at SciFest 2023. Visitors  were thus able to take a look at the roots of the science of glass, ceramics and building materials,  and admire the colourful crown of products made from these materials for traditional and non-traditional applications, for example in medicine, pharmaceuticals, automotive, electrical engineering, telecommunications, computer or optical industry or in the recovery of former waste  that can now be used as secondary raw materials.

The Ceramics in Europe 2022 event organized by the European Ceramic Society was held in Krakow  from the 10th to 14th July 2022. This event had brought together 3 important international conferences: XVIIth ECerS conference and Exhibition (ECerS XVII), 9th International Ceramic Conference (ICC9) and Electroceramics XVIII.

PhD students from our institute presented their work both in oral and poster sessions:

    • Vojtěch Nečina – The role of fluoride additives in the densification of ceramics – How does it work?
    • Soňa Hříbalová – Light scattering predictions for transparent ceramics with birefringent grains
    • Petra Šimonová – Shrinkage-free sintering of tin oxide ceramics – Monitoring microstructure and elastic property changes by temperature-dependent impulse excitation
    • Soňa Hříbalová – Analytical modeling of the effective properties of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics
    • Petra Šimonová – Elastic property evolution of silicate ceramics in the CaO–Al2O3–SiO2 system determined via temperature-dependent impulse excitation

On 12th September we had the pleasure to welcome to our department pupils from Elementary school of Professor Otokar Chlup of the Faculty of Education of Charles University. Pupils (maybe our students in the future) have seen the large lecture hall and our laboratories and also tried some practical experience, such as glass engraving and plaster casting.

We encounter glass at every step, whether in the form of glass, bottles, windows of jewelry. But the variety of glass forms certainly does not end there. Despite being invented more than 4000 years ago, glass is still among the most modern materials. we find it in the medicine, in space telescopes, it is used in construction, or even in lasers.

The United Nations elected the year 2022 as the International Year of Glass.

The International Glass Commission (ICG), the Community of Glass Associations (CGA), and ICOM-Glass promote 2022 as the International Year of Glass to emphasize its scientific, economic and cultural role.

Glass supports many vital technologies, or is even their basis, it facilitates sustainable development and enriches our lives, but often goes unnoticed. As part of the International Year of Glass 2022, a number of activities will take place around the world showing all the mentioned roles of glass as an artistic, historical but also highly modern material. Scientific and technological congresses and seminars, industrial fairs, art, and historical exhibitions will take place.

The Czech Republic, together with Slovakia, is also actively participating through the Czech Glass Society and the Slovak Glass Society and coordinates activities in Central and Southeastern Europe.

The entire glass year is framed by the February opening conference in Geneva and the December closing conference in Tokyo. The main scientific meeting will be the 26th International Glass Congress in Berlin. It is also planned to publish a number of special issues of professional glass magazines, dedicated to the Year of Glass. On the occasion of the Year of Glass, the book Welcome to the Age of Glass will be published.

Information on the Year of Glass with the most important events can be found at www.iyog2022.org. A detailed, continuously updated calendar of events in Central and South-Eastern Europe at https://askpcr.cz/aktivity/rok-skla-2022.

The Night of Scientists is an event that brings to life hundreds of science buildings in one evening that no ordinary mortal can enter. Visitors can wander through laboratories, lecture rooms, exploding experiments, and go into the depth of current topics. The Night of Scientists has been held in the Czech Republic since 2005 and is represented by Czech universities, scientific institutes, observatories, and other institutions.

We also traditionally take part in the Night of Scientists!
